The Overlords: Nemesis

Description

Of all the members of the Overlords, the woman who calls herself Nemesis is the one most recognizable to the outside world. While the rest are either virtually unknown or have revamped themselves to the point of having no resemblance to their former selves, Nemesis has not changed herself quite so radically. Even though there are many things different about her now, she is not so much a completely new person as more advanced evolution of the woman that the world once knew.

Originally, she was Erin, once the daughter of a member of a radical, militant feminist group with a religious bent, centered mainly on reverence for the Amazons, the Furies, and most especially, the goddess of vengeance and divine retribution: Nemesis. This group attempted to form a colony separate from the rest of the United States, independent of its materialistic, man-made laws. However, one of the members began to have second thoughts, and after fleeing the colony, alerted the authorities. Police descended upon the colony and subdued the radicals, separating all of the children present from their mothers, many of whom would be deemed unfit to be parents.

Throughout her life, Erin floated from foster home to foster home, never lasting longer than a few months in each. Her mother's radical indoctrination had already set in, and the combination of the lack of any stable parental figure, coupled with the genuine abuse and misogyny that she both witnessed and experienced at some of the foster homes, helped to cement these views into the young girl. She hated everything, and clung to the only thing she cherished: her memory of how her mother taught her about the goddess Nemesis.

Despite this Erin grew up to become a beautiful but extremely troubled young woman. She failed to make it through school due to her acidic personality, and fell into a transient life of crime. It was during this period of her life that her powers began to manifest, especially after she eviscerated a catcalling gangster with some nearby fencing. Erin had never abandoned her mother's beliefs, and her powers gave her a new sense of self-righteousness. Calling herself "Lady Nemesis," she crafted armor and weapons using her powers and became a brutally violent vigilante, taking down criminals and corrupt men beyond the reach of the law. Her targets were either exclusively men, or sometimes the women who participated in and enabled the systems of oppression for other women.

Over time, Lady Nemesis gained notoriety, and a significant following of supporters. This popularity attracted the attention of August Star, who was looking to bring new blood into the Allegiance as older members began to drop out. While some of his initial picks, like the cyborg supersoldier Barrage and the hulking shapeshifter Kid Creature, hadn't really caused much a of stir, this would be a much more controversial choice. Though she was initially skeptical, Erin began to warm to August Star as he laid out to his vision of how "justice" would be done in the future. Though he lacked her specific ideological bent, August Star and Lady Nemesis shared a common understanding of bringing evil to justice through brutal, unflinching displays of violence and intimidation. Thus, she joined him, and with her introduction many consider this to be the point where the Dark Allegiance was born.

After Lady Nemesis joined, other ultraviolent vigilantes like Nightreaper, Wytch, and Shinobi-X quickly followed, and even Barrage and Kid Creature rechristened themselves as Decimator and Hybridd to fit into the new paradigm. The Dark Allegiance set the tone for the following years, especially after they completely curbstomped the more traditional heroes of the Coalition of Champions. And Lady Nemesis loved every moment of it. She and August Star became an item, and her old feminist beliefs became less genuine and more of an excuse for her misandry, violence, and faux-BDSM tendencies, which became more and more public over time. But then Captain Meteor returned, and the jig was up.

After an initial confrontation with Meteor that involved Erin lashing out at the veteran hero, only to get humiliated by his wife Virago, the Dark Allegiance found itself under siege from the Grand Assembly that Meteor had formed to take the group down and bring them to justice. During the final battle Lady Nemesis found herself facing off against the heroine Aegis once more. As payback for what Erin and her Dark Allegiance comrades had done to Stormlord and the other Coalition heroes, Aegis delivered a truly epic beatdown to Lady Nemesis, her aura of invulnerability utterly repelling the antiheroine's attempts to defend herself. It was only because of her own significant powers that Lady Nemesis wasn't turned into mush by Aegis' righteous fury.

When Khagan Tsan attempted to use the battle as an opportunity to wipe all of the gathered heroes out in one strike, Erin took advantage of the distraction to slip away. She went to ground in the years that followed, using her powers to heal herself from the injuries she had sustained at Aegis' hands, replacing significant portions of her body with metals that thanks to her unique relationship with them became absorbed into her body, becoming a part of her. And while she waited, thoughts of revenge swirled in her mind. Revenge against the heroes, against those who had betrayed her lover, August Star, and revenge against Virago and Aegis for humiliating her. But even after many years of repairing herself, improving her skill with her powers, and developing new techniques from them, she was still not quite ready to go out and seek her vengeance. Then, the Archon found her.

Actually, it was Robert Vane's powerful ESP that had picked up on Erin's immense rage and hatred. It called out to him like a beacon. And when he discovered the source of this hate, he had an idea. Instead of revealing himself to Erin directly, he approached her as the Archon, and suggested a possible way for her to fully recuperate her strength and gain powerful allies that would enable her to exact the vengeance she craved. Thus, the Archon brought her into the Overlords, and she was welcomed.

Once more in the company of like-minded individuals, Erin decided to adjust her persona. Now simply calling herself "Nemesis," she has fully embraced the idea of becoming a living personification of the vengeful goddess, and even returned to some aspects of the radical feminist ideology of her mother, though she still mostly pays lip service to it. Under the guidance of Pravus and training with The Purifier and Bres the Beautiful she has refined herself into a supreme warrior far beyond what she used to be, and even incorporated enchantments learned from Pravus into her body and weapons. With this evolution to her power and persona, Erin is ready to aid her allies in the Overlords in their quest to save humanity from itself at the edge of a blade.
