Statesmen: Flagbearer

Description

The name "Flagbearer" is a storied one. There have been three men to bear this identity: the first and most well known one was the squad leader of the Patriot Unit, the United States' own answer to the German SS-Ubersoldatenkorps. One of the strongest and toughest extraordinaries of his time, he continued to lead the Patriots through the initial years of the Cold War, then the Super War, and then finally the Skarn Invasion. By the time that battle had been won age and injuries sustained had taken their toll, as well as a certain lack of faith in the leadership of the United States. Subsequently, he retired, and remains living somewhere in a secret, isolated home, his reward for serving his country.

The second Flagbearer was a much more patriotic, gung-ho individual who unquestioningly obeyed every single order handed down to him. Between this mindless loyalty and his sharp temper toward anyone he perceived as "anti-American," he quickly drew strong dislike from the public, and more than a few secretly called him "Pallbearer". But he perform his fair share of heroic actions in his time, and even though his final battle with the rogue Russian hero Metyeor is painted as being an example of two ideological fanatics clashing in a meaningless battle, other former Patriots and German citizens described him as intercepting Metyeor in order to contain any damage from the rogue "hero" rampaging through Berlin and buy his fellow heroes time to evacuate innocents caught in the crossfire.

The third and current Flagbearer is Rogelio "Roger" Augusto, a veteran of Afghanistan who lost both legs and an arm to an IED. Due to his injuries he was assigned to the experimental "Project Hydra," a DARPA project experimenting with nanobots as a way to rebuild tissue and potentially regrow limbs. Miguel was their first success, but in some ways he was too successful, as the microscopic machines not just healed him and rebuilt his limbs, but completely reconstructed his body at the cellular level, turning him into a cybernetic powerhouse with a biomechanical, synthetic body. This posed problems when inspectors from CENTRI, the United Nations' organization for enforcing international treaties regulating the use of extraordinaries and creation of artificial extraordinaries, arrived on the basis of a possible violation of the UNEC resolutions. In the end, they decided not pursue any further action, deeming the situation to be an accidental result of a program *not* meant to create extraordinaries, but cautioning DARPA not to dabble in more such "accidents".

Meanwhile, the ERA had been unsuccessfully attempting to find a "Flagbearer" recruit for the Statesmen, the post-UNEC successor of the Patriots, and so when Rogelio presented himself, they snatched him up to become the role, much to his chagrin and protests. He was a soldier, not a hero, let alone one capable of sustaining such a legacy. So it is that Revere, one of the last remaining men to have known the first Flagbearer and effectively the leader of the Statesmen, has taken it upon himself to mentor and mold the successor to his old friend's legacy. Slowly but surely, he is coming into his own.
